1. The Indian Peafowl is more commonly known as the peacock (males) or the peahen (females).

2. Females tend to have dull brown plumage, while males are distinguished by their striking, brightly colored plumage and their elaborate tails. The upper tail covers on the back of the male are elongated, with an “eye” at the end of each feather.

3. The male’s color plays an integral role in the mating process, whereas the female’s coloration is essential to camouflage and survival.

4. Studies have suggested that the length and quality of the male’s tail is an honest signal of the condition of that male and that females select males based on the quality of their plumage.

5. When the length of the tail is included, female Indian Peafowl have a body length of about 3 feet, while males can attain lengths of up to 7 feet.

6. Female Indian Peafowl weigh about 7 lbs., while males weigh about 11 lbs.

7. The diet of the Indian Peafowl consists mostly of insects, plants, berries, and small amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. They also forage in farmland, utillizing crops such as sugar cane.

8. Indian Peafowl prefer deciduous forests and semi-open country next to streams with thick undergrowth. They can also be found in in dry semi-desert grasslands and associated scrublands.

9. The Indian Peafowl is native to the Indian subcontinent.

10. The Indian Peafowl is the national bird of India since 1963.

11. When peacock, peahen and peachicks live together, it is known as bevy.

12. The peacock is also very famous for its flight. The flight of this bird seems quite interesting and amusing for many people.

13. At the time of mating, the peacock performs courtship display with beautiful dance.
