National Science Day
Sir.C.V.Raman (1888 – 1970) 
Every  year, the National  Science Day is celebrated on 28th February in honour of our Nobel laureate and great Indian Physicist Sir C.V.Raman. On February 28th, 1928, he announced the discovery of the Raman Effect at the Indian Institute of Science. The novel discovery of Raman Effect brought the first Nobel Prize in science for our country in the year 1930.

Raman Effect is a phenomenon which influences diverse fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, archeology, geology, agriculture, forensic science, communication engineering, computing, laser technology, etc.

Sir.C.V.Raman was the first Asian to get Nobel Prize in Science. In 1954, Raman was awarded the Bharat Ratna and was honored with the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957. He became the director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1934 where he served as a professor of Physics. In 1947, Government of India appointed him the first National Professor. He left the Indian Institute of Science in 1948 and set up the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore and served as its director until his death in 1970, at the age of 82.

Hence, the National Science Day is an important day for Indian Scientific Community. It is a day, which attracts many young minds to take up science as their career and a day to understand novel scientific achievements.The celebrations on this day include showcasing the country’s competence in the field of science. The day has become significant as it reminds us the importance of science in societal transformation.
