1. Alpacas are one of the domesticated members of the camel (camelid) family which also includes llamas, guanacos, and vicunas from South America, and the Bactrian and Dromedary camels from Asia and Africa. This family of animals originated on the plains of North America about 10 million years ago.

2. Alpaca is a Spanish word derived from the Aymara name allpacu or the Quechua names pacos or pacoshas. The Aymara and Quechua people are today’s traditional owners of Alpacas.

3. There are two types of alpacas. The Huacaiya alpaca has a dense fluffy fleece. The Suri alpaca has a long (think dreadlocks!) lustered fleece.

4. Alpaca fleece is considered one of the finest in the world…the gold of the Andes. It is six times warmer than wool, has no itch factor and is similar to cashmere.

5. Alpacas are members of the camelid family, as are llamas, camels,vicunas, and jaunacos.

6. Alpacas originated from South America, high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Chile, and Bolivia.

7. Alpacas have strong herding instincts and need alpaca companions to be healthy and happy.

8. Alpacas are smaller than llamas, about 36” tall at the shoulders, weigh 135-165lbs. and live 20 years.

9. Alpacas come in 22 colors!

10. A female carries her cria (baby) for an 11-12 month gestation.

11. Cria are 12-18 lbs. at birth.

12. Alpacas have padded feet, which are easy on pastures.

13. Alpacas are sheared once a year in the spring to help them stay cool in the summer.

14. Alpacas are registered with the Alpaca Registry Inc (ARI) and are insurable to protect your investment.

15. Alpacas are very easy to take care of; all that is required is pasture, hay, water,and some supplemental vitamins and minerals.

16. Alpacas are very quiet and docile. What sound do they hum.

17. Their gentle disposition, need for minimal care, and ability to adapt to a variety of climates makes them an easy species for which to care. Llamas and alpacas may be collectively referred to as “lamas.”

18. Llamas are ungulate (hooved mammals) natives to the Andes of South America.

19. Alpacas are members of the Camelid family which includes both Bactrim and Dromedary camels as well as Lama members: Vicuna, Guanaco, and Llamas 

20. Alpaca babies are called crias and usually weigh between 12 and 25 pounds at birth.

21. Alpacas use communal dung pile often lining up to take their turn at the “potty pile” where they deposit their “beans

22. Alpacas have two defense mechanisms kicking andspitting. They will not kick, bite or spit at people unless provoked.

23. Alpaca fiber is comparable to cashmere-luxurious feeling.

24. Alpaca fiber is stronger and lighter than sheep wool of the same fineness.11
