1. Octopus’s belong to the class Cephalopoda which includes squid and cuttlefish.2. The Octopus is found world wide in sub-tropical seas.
3. Their name comes from 2 Greek words meaning ‘8 feet’ & some people call them Devilfish because of their frightening appearance.
4. Octopi eat a diet of: Gastropods, Bivalves, Snails, Oysters, Clams, Crabs and Crayfish!
5. The Octopus lives a solitary life in a den and stock- piles food nearby!
6. An Octopus has three hearts and it can squeeze through a hole the size of a 10-cent coin.
7. No bones makes the octopus fast and it can go on any subject.
8. Eyes - they are very big and they fool enemies.
9. The octopus turns white when its scared, and red its angry( pink and gray normal).
10. When the octopus sees something that looks good it reaches for the subject. The octopus eats things with shells they stick there tongues in the shell and pokes the meat out and spits the shell out.
11. They have strong, hard jaws that come to a point like a parrot’s beak. They use these jaws to cut up their food.
12. There are 50 kinds of Octopi & over 100 species. They belong to a group of shellfish called Mollusks & rarely eat humans.
13. The Giant Pacific Octopus is one of the largest species of the Octopi. Its reddish-brown body, called The Mantle, & four pairs of arms both have an average of 16 feet long from arm tip to arm tip. The record weight for a Giant Pacific Octopus is 600 pounds, but most of them weigh about 50-90 pounds & the newly born young are the size of a grain of rice.
19. The Giant Pacific Octopus can use a sample of defence by using a force of water out of its body whilst propelling itself backwards. This ability is used to escape its prey.The Blue-Ringed Octopus is 20cm long with a soft body. They are small & brown & have 2 sharp eyes on both sides of their head. When they are born they are the size of a pea & when they are fully grown they are the size of a golf ball. You will normally find them in rock-pools or coastal areas & they only live in Australia.
20. You may think they are just harmless animals according to their size but The Blue-Ringed Octopus has enough poison to kill 26 adults. When a person is bitten, after 15 minutes the venom attacks your body so that your muscles can’t move.
21. Scientists have recently discovered that a “new” bright orange Octopus with webbed arms is different. They have found that this Animal can glow in the dark from depths of about 900 metres.
22. Octopi do not like to swim. This is because they are an Ocean Animal which means they rarely do much swimming. The Octopus would rather pull itself along with its 8 sucker-lined tentacles.
23. The beak is used for cracking open the shells of crabs, crayfish, oysters and others shelled creatures.
24. Did you know that some studies suggest that an Octopus has 6 legs and 2 arms instead of just 8 tentacles!
25. The eyesight of an Octopus is the same as a human!
26. Blind Octopuses can tell the difference between different objects just as well as one with sight!
27. Each tentacle has 240 suckers, if you multiply that by 8, you get, yes that’s right, 1,920 suckers on one Octopus.
28. The Octopus can camouflage itself to blend in with it’s surroundings in a short period of time!
29. The Octopus can blind it’s predators with ink when attacked!
30. Suckers are located on the underside of the tentacles which help the Octopus grab on to its prey!
31. The Octopus has an extremely acute sense of touch!
32. The Antarctic Octopus has adapted it’s venom to work in sub-zero temperatures!
33. Octopi venom could help humans with their fight against pain, cancer and allergies!
34. Octopus eyes are adapted to cope in dim underwater light!
35. When a girl and boy octopus think that it time to have babies they join together. The father reaches under the mother octopus's skin than the mother lays 2,000 too 3,000 eggs. The mother octopus dies when the last octopus hatches. This is due to a gland that secretes a “death” hormone to ensure a genetically preprogrammed death.
36. The octopus’s enemies are stingrays, eels, dolphins.
37. Camouflage-the octopus’s hidden body is very hard to see in in the ocean.
38. An octopus can grow new tentacles if one comes off.
39. An octopus swims very fast and escapes enemies.
40. It’s eggs look like rice on ribbon.
41. They are also regarded as one of the most intelligent of all sea creatures for their uncanny problem solving skills. They have the ability to open jars and can be trained in similar ways to a dolphin or dog
